  • The Origins of Martial Arts: Tracing the Roots of Discipline and Self-Defense

Martial arts, a captivating and diverse discipline, has enticed practitioners and enthusiasts for centuries, evolving from ancient civilizations to present-day practices, and leaving an indelible mark on cultures worldwide. In this blog post, we embark on a journey into the origins of martial arts, uncovering its historical roots and the enduring principles that continue to shape its practice. We'll also highlight the essence and principles of karate. Additionally, we'll showcase how ActivStars Athletics not only embraces these time-honored traditions, including karate but also provides a modern and innovative approach to martial arts education. Ancient Beginnings Martial arts can be traced back thousands of years, originating in various ancient civilizations. For example, in China, martial arts had its roots in the Shaolin Temple, where Buddhist monks developed a system of physical training to improve health, discipline, and self-defense. In Japan, the samurai warriors practiced martial arts as a means of honing their combat skills and cultivating a code of ethics known as Bushido. Exploring these ancient beginnings helps us understand the values of discipline, respect, and personal growth that martial arts embody. Cultural Influences and Styles Over time, martial arts developed distinctive styles and techniques, heavily influenced by the cultures and regions in which they emerged. From the powerful strikes of Muay Thai in Thailand to the flowing movements of Tai Chi in China, each martial art form reflects the traditions and philosophies of its cultural origins. At ActivStars Athletics, we honor this diversity by offering a wide range of martial arts disciplines, allowing students to explore and appreciate different styles while finding their own path. Discipline and Mental Focus Martial arts is not just about physical strength and technique—it is a practice that cultivates discipline and mental focus. Through repetitive movements, forms, and meditation, practitioners develop concentration, patience, and the ability to control their emotions. This mental aspect of martial arts is a crucial element that helps individuals build self-confidence and resilience. At ActivStars Athletics, our instructors understand the importance of discipline and provide guidance to help students develop not only their physical skills but also their mental fortitude. Self-Defense and Empowerment A fundamental aspect of martial arts is self-defense. The techniques and strategies taught in martial arts classes equip individuals with practical skills to protect themselves and others. Learning self-defense not only enhances physical safety but also empowers individuals with the confidence to navigate challenging situations. ActivStars Athletics places a strong emphasis on self-defense training, ensuring that students feel capable and secure in their abilities. History of Karate In our exploration of martial arts, we cannot overlook the significant contribution of karate, a discipline that has captivated practitioners and enthusiasts worldwide. As we delve into the origins of martial arts, let's also highlight the essence and enduring principles of karate that continue to shape the practice today. Ancient Origins and the Way of the Empty Hand Karate has ancient beginnings that can be traced back to the island of Okinawa in Japan. Originally known as "Tode" or "China Hand," karate emerged from the integration of traditional Okinawan martial arts with influences from Chinese kung fu. The name "karate" itself means "empty hand," reflecting the unarmed nature of the practice, as it does not involve the use of weapons. Principles of Karate Central to karate are the principles that guide practitioners both on and off the training mat. These principles include: Courtesy and Respect: Practitioners of karate are taught to show respect to their instructors, fellow students, and opponents. Courtesy and humility are considered essential traits in fostering a positive and harmonious training environment. Discipline and Focus: Karate requires dedication and mental focus to master the techniques and forms. Through disciplined training, practitioners develop mental strength and resilience. Self-Control and Emotional Regulation: Karate teaches individuals to control their emotions and reactions, promoting a balanced and composed approach to challenges in both training and life. Continuous Improvement: In karate, there is an emphasis on constant self-improvement. Practitioners strive to refine their techniques, deepen their understanding, and grow as individuals. The origins of martial arts are deeply rooted in history, tradition, and cultural heritage. From its ancient beginnings to modern-day practice, martial arts has evolved into a multifaceted discipline that promotes discipline, self-confidence, and personal growth. ActivStars Athletics embraces this rich heritage while providing a contemporary approach to martial arts education. By exploring diverse martial arts styles, emphasizing discipline and mental focus, and equipping students with self-defense skills, ActivStars Athletics empowers individuals of all ages to embark on an enriching journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. • How to Keep Your Child Athlete Healthy This Winter

When the temperature drops low in winter, it’s easy for parents and child athletes to want to stay in, snuggle down, and become one with the couch. There’s nothing wrong with a good winter video session every now and then, but staying healthy requires getting up and moving too! To help our ActivStars Athletics family stay active, happy, and healthy, we’ve got some tips for what you can do easily and what to be careful of all winter long. Stay Active! The best tip for your child, whether they’re a sports fanatic or just enjoy the occasional game, is to play all winter long. Look for sports and opportunities indoors or out to help your child play and stay fit. For older children, encourage them to work out at home to avoid the cold. You can let them use their own body weight for exercise (think push-ups) or pick up some light resistance gear. There are plenty of free and low-cost options, and this can keep your child healthy if they don’t want to go outside where it’s chilly. Here are some of our favorite exercises for the winter months: Lift weights, stretch, or do push-ups while watching a show or playing a video game. Dance! You’ll get a full-body workout and have plenty of fun. YouTube has great videos that teach you the latest dance moves, making it easy to treat this as group fun. Yoga and meditation. Stretching is a great way to keep your muscles, heart, and lungs healthy. Pair it with relaxation or meditation to reduce overall stress and anxiety. Remember that cold months can lead to increases in depression for some people. Slow down karate forms or learn some basic tai chi to work your muscles by controlling each movement. It’s a terrific way to work on balance and improve breathing too. If you have a covered walkway, driveway, or access to a space like a tennis or basketball court, try jumping rope. It’ll work out the whole body and give you a boost to rhythm and timing that’s useful in many sports. Walk it out. A brisk walk is a straightforward way for the whole family to stay active and healthy. You can make it a game or contest by using everyone’s smartphones as step counters and see who gets the most steps. Plus, a fast-paced walk can burn 300 or more calories per hour. Enjoy the season! There’s plenty of things you can do to have fun during the winter that still gives you a workout. Building a fire can burn 80 calories an hour, while shoveling snow gets close to 200. Even a good snowball fight (whether you use real snow or the fun scrunchy balls for sale) can burn about 100 calories each hour. There are lots to do in the winter to stay active. At the same time, you should also focus on being safe while you play. Let’s look at how to keep you and your child healthy this winter. General Health Tips It seems like everyone gets a cold during the winter, but there are steps you can take to reduce this risk. First, keep everyone home when sick because you don’t want to catch a cold from someone else or get other people sick. Second, wash your hands the way doctors tell you to — a handy guide for little ones here . Also, teach children to cough or sneeze into tissues or the inside of their elbow. This prevents the spread of germs. Remember that you can’t get the flu from a flu shot! So, it’s a beautiful way to protect your child against very severe and dangerous illness. Another common misconception to tackle is winter sunburn. Your child can definitely get sunburns during the winter, especially when it reflects off of snow or water. Protect your child’s skin and eyes during winter activities. If you’ll be spending a lot of time indoors, please get a carbon monoxide detector for your home. It might just save your child’s life. Winter-Time Warnings to Watch Wintry weather can change and become dangerous very quickly, especially if you’re in the mountains, deserts, or an area where it snows heavily. Always check your local weather conditions and the wind chill so that you’re dressing appropriately. For smaller children, the best recommendation is to give them one more layer than you are comfortable wearing. Layers are great for exercise because you can take some off as you warm up, so you don’t get overheated. Bundle up a little extra if humidity is high or there’s a lot of wind. Remember that at a wind chill level of below minus 18 F (minus 28 C), frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less . If someone has been outside for a long time, always check on them. Danger signs for hypothermia include intense shivering, fatigue, loss of coordination, and slurred speech. Exercising outside in cold, rainy, or snowy weather increases the risk of hypothermia. Further protect everyone by ensuring they’ve got warm covers for feet, hands, ears, and the top of the head. You’ve been a great parent all year, and we’re very happy to celebrate the end of 2019 with you. May you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and we’ll see you in the New Year!

  • 4 Ways Martial Arts Boosts Self-Confidence

Confident martial arts students Martial arts is a discipline that goes beyond physical training and self-defense . It offers numerous benefits, including the boost in self-confidence. Whether you're a child, teenager, or adult, practicing martial arts can have a positive impact on your self-esteem and overall well-being. Here are four ways martial arts can help boost self-confidence. Physical Fitness and Skill Development: One of the primary aspects of martial arts is physical fitness. Regular training in martial arts disciplines helps improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. As individuals see themselves progress and achieve physical milestones, such as mastering a new technique or earning a higher belt rank, their self-confidence naturally increases. Knowing that they can overcome challenges and improve their physical abilities instills a sense of pride and belief in their own capabilities. Goal Setting and Achievement: Martial arts provides a structured environment for goal setting and achievement. Students set short-term and long-term goals, such as perfecting a specific technique or advancing to the next belt level. Through consistent training and dedication, individuals witness their progress over time. Each accomplishment, no matter how small, reinforces their self-confidence and motivates them to continue working towards their goals. The process of setting and achieving goals in martial arts translates to other areas of life, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-assurance. Positive Reinforcement and Supportive Community: Positive reinforcement plays a vital role in building self-confidence. Instructors and fellow students provide encouragement and support, celebrating individual achievements and milestones. The sense of belonging to a supportive community creates a safe and nurturing environment where individuals feel valued and accepted. This positive reinforcement bolsters self-esteem, helping students overcome self-doubt and embrace their abilities. Self-Defense Skills and Personal Safety: Learning self-defense techniques empowers individuals to feel more confident in their ability to protect themselves. Martial arts training teaches practical skills for self-defense scenarios, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to handle challenging situations. Understanding how to assess threats, react appropriately, and defend oneself promotes a greater sense of personal safety and security. This increased self-assurance carries over into other aspects of life, allowing individuals to navigate various environments with a greater sense of confidence. Martial arts offers a multitude of benefits, and one of the most significant is the boost in self-confidence. Through physical fitness, skill development, goal achievement, positive reinforcement, and self-defense training, individuals of all ages can experience increased self-esteem, resilience, and belief in their own abilities. • ActivStars Athletics Supports Children with Special Needs

Every child, including children with special needs and unique health concerns, can benefit from the exercise, learning, social connections, and fun that can be found with sports. At ActivStars Athletics , our mission is to make our martial arts programs as inclusive as possible. We’re proud to have a fantastic staff and training on Autism Spectrum Disorder and other needs. It’s how we can best work with all children in our communities. Parents of special needs children should encourage participation in sports and physical activity in general. Don’t approach sports as something they can’t do. Exercise and games create a potential place for your child to grow, according to leading medical research. Your child with special needs can still participate and get benefits such as boosting self-confidence, improved cognitive health and social and motor skills, and even reduce risks for some weight issues or diseases. Stanford Medicine’s Children’s Health department suggests parents find ways for all children to participate in sports. In many cases, that may mean needing modification or support for special needs children. At ActivStars Athletics, we do just that. It’s part of our mission, and we encourage all parents to reach out with concerns so that they can join us in having fun, learning, and growing. Our Goal: Helping Your Kids “Our goal is for kids to be comfortable so they can have fun and learn,” says Dr. Sue Riese. Dr. Riese is a martial arts teacher here at ActivStars Athletics and currently assists at classes, tournaments, testing, and special events such as Masters’ Camps and summer camp. She has a storied career as a teacher, counselor, and school psychologist, working extensively with children who have special needs. She has provided training to parents, teachers, school bus drivers, teaching assistants, and cafeteria aides on safe ways to help children and adults who are agitated; and how to de-escalate potentially violent situations. And we’re lucky that she brings those same lessons and information here to our programs at ActivStars Athletics. We spoke with Dr. Riese about some of the work she is doing with children who have special needs, and the ActivStars Athletics approach to their health, wellness, education, and growth. She is currently working with children of a variety of ages who need special attention, from learning how to say when they’re frustrated or need extra time to more elementary activities such as entering the dojo on their own and decreasing their need to have parents present. Defining Our Approach “I want to help children feel successful with their abilities, no matter where they are. So, we have to know how success is defined for them, so we can find ways for them to engage, learn, and have fun,” said Dr. Riese. And we also share with parents that there are times your child is just like everyone else. For example, most small children are initially afraid of sparring. So, all kids understand that not everyone likes every kind of touch, and we work with everyone to slowly acclimate. ActivStars Athletics’ team is trained to work with children as their needs change, which means we’re always putting education and comfort first. And we make it easy for parents to stay on top of information too. How Does ActivStars Respond to Children with Special Needs? “We work with every family and take the child where they’re at,” said Dr. Riese. “It might take little steps for a child to wear a piece of equipment before being ready to participate. Everything is done in increments, and that’s always okay.” ActivStars Athletics staff receives training and has ongoing discussions to help everyone learn how to care for children with differing needs. Our annual meeting specifically covered working with children who have Autism because it has some unique concerns, but we also learn about ADHD, depression, social anxiety, children who are non-verbal, and other things that may impact a child’s desire or ability to play and learn. Our efforts aim to normalize the interactions that all children have, allowing us to work with everyone. Not only does it support those children with special needs and help their parents understand what to expect, but it also encourages other children to build empathy and friendships with kids who may seem different, but often are much more similar than first impressions suggest. Celebrating Together Plus, by working together, we often get to celebrate the victories and improvements that children make. It brings our staff and the child’s parent a lot of joy. Sometimes, nothing is better in a class than a child advocating for what they need. This might be telling us that they need a little time by themselves instead of exhibiting other behaviors. We create a space where they feel comfortable doing this. It’s perfect practice for feeling overwhelmed outside class too. In practice, our work involves pairing a child with special needs with someone who will be patient and engage with them as needed. We start with adults at the beginning but can also encourage limited interaction with friends and other children once your child becomes more comfortable. When possible, we work to manage environmental triggers for our students, such as proximity to other children or quick changes in activities. Programs are designed to give us flexibility so that everyone can progress at their own pace. “Parents are eager for a child to have as normal an experience as they can. That’s what we try to accomplish,” said Dr. Riese. Talk with Us About Your Child’s Special Needs Considering a sports program for your child? Have concerns about their needs, safety, or other requirements? We encourage you to speak with us. We train coaches and staff to work with children on a wide range of issues already. However, we can do our best when we know you and your child. “We’re already speaking with parents a lot to find out how to provide the assistance a child needs without impacting the other children who are there,” said Dr. Riese. She notes that ActivStars staff actively monitor situations whenever a child needs help. There are a few things we encourage parents to discuss with us: Diagnosis Triggers Medical needs or changes to medicine If your child has had a rough day And what brings them comfort or helps ease discomfort We’ll do what we can to accommodate your child. For example, one child would bring a stuffed animal when the first joined. So, it came to class too. Slowly, the animal moved away from the center of activity as the child grew more comfortable with class. It’s there on the side if the child needs it. But, they’ve grown to engage in class and activities, so the stuffed animal is more observer than participant these days. That’s a fantastic feeling for us, the child, and their parents. We encourage everyone to come and have fun, which means a stuffed animal joins in, or mom and dad too. There are lots of different ways to help, and we’re continually training staff on those programs. Let Us Help If you have questions, we encourage you to speak with us so that you can feel comfortable and find a program that your child truly enjoys.

  • Prioritizing fun in youth sports helps kids stay safe, learn more, and go farther

Every semester we see a growing increase in interest and participation in youth s ports programs for kids of all ages. Younger children are starting to look at sports as a way to make friends and have fun. While you and educators like us often focus on the health benefits (physical and mental), we must foster the desire for fun. Let’s keep that in mind when encouraging children to get active. Parental support of fun and play are proven to keep your child more engaged and excited about youth sports. That’s regardless of the sport or their ability level. Work with your school, coaches, and programs like ActivStars Athletics. Together, we’ll foster a love of the game that’s fun and builds a healthy foundation for the rest of their life. Students play sports to have fun As parents and educators, we like to think of all the benefits for children and youth who engage in sports like karate. Things that come to mind are keeping our kids safe after school and on the weekends, away from the wrong crowd. Plus, it helps develop motor skills, keeps them fit and healthy, improves how well they work in teams, and can even help them do better in school. It turns out that our kids have something else in mind: fun. A long list of studies and surveys and interviews, like this one from The New York Times , show that children and students play sports to have fun, not to be the best and win all the time or gain scholarships. Regardless of age, gender, and the sport they choose to play, “kids are out there to get away from their lives and have a good time with their friends.” So, in the spirit of listening, we wanted to take a quick look at some of the core concepts of fun and what you might be able to do as parents to ensure that your star is happy. An enjoyable time keeps kids engaged longer An important note for us getting started is that the pursuit of fun can have direct positive benefits for your child. This isn’t a flight of fancy or a whim. It’s a way to build a life-long love of sports and activity that will help your child grow and age properly — especially if they develop habits that continue when they become parents too. Having fun with a sport or activity helps your child do it longer. Given that 70% of kids quit youth sports by age 13 , we must listen to each child to keep them engaged. Many say they left because the focus was all on winning and placed significant pressure on them. They didn’t see any of the fun benefits or other educational and safety opportunities . If your child is out on the field to have fun, the pressure of competition can force them out. Sports psychologist Justin Anderson of Premier Sport Psychology also says that letting your youth athlete have fun and enjoy the sports they play will help them do better and learn more. “Kids are there to learn, and they can’t do it in a negative or stressful environment.” When they’re having fun, they want to train and play more and may even perform at higher levels because they don’t worry that a coach, parent, or another adult will be mad at them for a mistake. It keeps their self-confidence high, says Anderson . The role of parents in fun and sport The part of parents in youth sports enjoyment is to help your child find what they enjoy and to encourage them to participate in a safe activity and environment. A large-scale study on youth sports found a few things we think are worth sharing: Your child’s perception of your support and your belief that sports will have positive benefits impact how much they want to participate. Your encouragement plays a more prominent role than almost any other factor, including whether or not you play sports or do another exercise. Parents who express the importance of activity have more active children. This is seen in parents of children of all types and ability. Your positive attitude about participating (think of it as empowering instead of prioritizing winning) is shown to increase how much your child enjoys sports and can decrease sports-related stress. Parents play a crucial role in creating an environment for their child to enjoy youth sports. You also play a role in how much fun other children on your child’s team have. At the same time, parents are the most significant protection system a child has. You are the best to prevent abuse by anyone, from coaches and medical staff to other parents and people outside of sports. To be your child’s best protector, the study suggests you ask questions of everyone involved. Have that conversation Speak to sports program providers like us. Talk to other parents. Engage guidance counselors and teachers. We don’t need to tell you that, you already know it. What ActivStars Athletics is saying here is that you have a right to ask questions and get answers. Smart questions to ask for any youth program include: How do you hire? Does everyone have references and a background check? How do you teach coaches and staff to look for and prevent abuse? Do you have a code of conduct for staff as well as students? What are your specific rules for communicating with students and parents? Are the facilities you use well-maintained and safe? What do you expect a parent to do? We want to give you those answers. So, we’re always open to your questions. Ask your coaches directly or r each out to us here .

  • Our Mission to Support Affordable Youth Sports

Millions of America’s children stopped playing sports in 2019, and the main culprit is a lack of local, affordable youth sports. It’s believed that childhood participation in sports has declined by 8% in the country due to costs that often range in the thousands of dollars per year. Sports are a vitally important aspect of growth, and we believe they should be open to all. Our belief doesn’t just come from the smiles we see each week or the stories our kids come back and tell us year after year. Leading research in science, health, and social growth tells us the same thing too. Here’s why we think that every child deserves to play and how ActivStars aims to make youth sports affordable for all. Plus, there are ways you can help too! Science Says ‘Play Ball’ According to the Aspen Institute , there are some significantly important reasons we should help every child play a sport: Athletes score up to 40% higher on tests in class as well as things like the SAT They’re 15% more likely to attend college On average, they’ll earn 8% higher annual salaries They’re 1/10th as likely to become obese later in life They’re less likely to smoke, use drugs, or engage in other risky behaviors in their teens and early adulthood We’ve all been told that the habits we have in our early years can impact our later life. That conventional wisdom is backed up by science consistently. It’s good for your child to play sports today, and it’s arguably even better for them down the road. When we think of our own children, we want to give them that advantage. So does every parent. That’s why it’s part of the ActivStars mission to make youth sports affordable for every child we can. Let’s welcome everyone to the field, gym, tournament, and more. Everyone’s children, everyone’s future, deserve it. Support Affordable Youth Sports: Tell Everyone Your Story One of the best things any adult can do to support affordable youth sports— whether you’re a parent or a former youth athlete — is to start by telling your community why sports matter. There are two crucial questions to answer: What impact did they have on you and your life? How can others benefit like that too? And remember that your answers are always okay. Some people played sports to feel like there was something they could do well, or even hope for a school scholarship. Others use sports to avoid problems in their neighborhood. For many, sports are simply a way to have fun and be with your friends while developing interpersonal skills. There are countless reasons that kids play sports, and we think countless benefits for it too. Your reason is a great one for why every community should have affordable youth sports, and it’s an effective way to start performing outreach too. Let’s Get Every Child on the Field The financial status and ability of a parent shouldn’t hinder a child’s development. Not in school and not in sports. Investing in every single child is a worthwhile endeavor. Unfortunately, children whose families are lower-income are more likely to attend schools that don’t have enough money to offer a wide range of sports, enrichment, and academic programs. Many, according to federal reports, go to schools that have consolidated or eliminated sports programs since the early 2000s. When schools can’t afford to offer these programs, it’s time for groups like ActivStars to step in and step up for the benefit of our kids. ActivStars offers classes starting at $9 per week in most areas, which is affordable for a large number of the children in our communities. When that isn’t affordable for parents, we provide assistance through scholarships and individual applications designed to help get everyone on the field. Learn more about our Scholarships and how to request assistance here . If you’re able to contribute your time, talent, or treasure, learn about donating through our 501(C)(3) charitable organization here . Sports play a fundamental role in childhood development. Kids who play sports are better able to handle the pressures of their class, community, and social roles. Such an important piece of the development puzzle should never be a luxury few can afford.

  • Why Is Physical Literacy Important for You and Your Child?

Physical literacy is one of the latest buzzwords when it comes to your child’s daily activities. The good news is that it is a terrific way to understand how to keep your child healthy. We love it, and you’ll love it too when you learn a little more about physical literacy. So, why talk about it today? Youth sports have their most significant impact when kids are encouraged to develop a love of healthy exercise for their entire lives. This requires a program framework that supports a variety of life skills. This conversation usually centers on teamwork and a sense of fair play. However, it can go a little further and deliver more powerful benefits. What is physical literacy? So, physical literacy can sound a little confusing, and like it’s going to be something complex, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Physical literacy is just learning the way our bodies move so we can run, jump, catch, and more. They’re movement skills that help children learn how their bodies act and what they can do. This often happens naturally as they play youth sports or just have fun in the backyard. Think about the way your child learned to talk. They started with singular sounds and then groups of sounds. Slowly, these became words, then phrases and sentences. We learn about our bodies in much the same way. Physical literacy is just a purposeful method for encouraging those movement “sentences.” Your child is encouraged to talk more when they feel confident about how they can speak. They’re also more likely to play and stick with sports when they feel comfortable with their bodies. Our lessons turn games into youth programs that provide building blocks for a happy life. Will physical literacy in youth programs benefit your child? Physical literacy is “ a gateway to an active lifestyle from childhood through to adulthood.” It can provide significant benefits for your child throughout their life. The concept is associated with many health improvements, such as a reduced risk for obesity .Some studies have found that it can improve how alert your child feels during the school day. We’ve also seen children gain confidence in other areas over their lives, such as in making friends and tackling new challenges. Physical literacy ensures that they are comfortable to try something new. Your star, like many students, may become eager for a novel experience. For your youth martial arts students, there’s also an increase in coordination and response time in a broad set of activities. These can help your athlete train and excel as well as make it easier for them to enjoy a new sport or hobby like playing an instrument. These elements can encourage curiosity and sharpen the mind to adapt to whatever comes next. Plus, we also find that kids who like to move and know how also tend to increase their love of youth sports. The desire for physical activity can carry on into adulthood. Does ActivStars Athletics encourage physical literacy? Part of our mission at ActivStars Athletics is to teach your child how to enjoy youth sports with their peers and foster a desire for activity. We’re helping to prepare your child to have a positive body image and healthy habits as an adult . Practice and competition both play a significant role in youth sports’ ability to teach us how our bodies move. Together, we can help create the motivation and ability to understand all of these new ways to move. Plus, we give your child the tools they need to talk when something doesn’t feel right or safe. ActivStars Athletics encourages healthy, active choices that can be beneficial to anyone participating in youth sports. We show how to be respectful of ourselves, friends and peers, and the communities we live in together, reinforced through specific programs . Youth programs are the best way to teach these skills while also ensuring your child gets all the health benefits of an active life. Physical literacy is all about the way we move and how to understand our bodies. By establishing these foundations through practice and coaching, your child will be well-prepared for the rest of their adolescence and their adult lives. Building such skills early on is one of the best ways to encourage a healthy child to become a healthy adult.

  • Youth Sports and Your Child: A Winning Combination for a Bright Future

A compelling after-school program for your child can help turn aimless hours and screen time into productive, enjoyable learning time that enhances their lives for years to come. We looked at a broad set of research on youth sports plus our kids (and parents) to figure out how ActivStars were performing in our programs, in class, and their daily lives. We found a few important things that show just how much your child would benefit from a rigorous after-school program of youth sports. Of course, we’d love them to become ActivStars, but we hope this can help convince you to get them in whichever program works best. If you want the highlights, here are six things that scientific studies have linked after-school sports and team programs to developing: Improved focus on accomplishing goals Increased discipline Improved ability to work as part of a team (outside of sports) Enhanced physical skills such as balance and coordination Increased enjoyment of participating in social activities Activity is also linked to a reduced risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease Keep reading to learn about some more surprising benefits we’ve discovered. Youth Sports Behavioral Benefits Are Most Impactful When Specifically Taught Here’s one of the most interesting findings from a major review of after-school and weekend school programs: behavioral benefits such as improving leadership, developing character, or keeping behavior appropriate are found to be most successful and long-lasting when specifically taught . This means children need more than a study hall where they are shushed when too loud. They need specific help and guidance on how to behave. Children need “programming directed at developing social and emotional skills” to achieve significant positive effects on social behavior and self-perceptions. ActivStars Athletics works these skills into our training and coaching so that all of our youth have opportunities to learn and grow. You can find out more about this in our SAFE Shield and anti-bullying programs . Youth Benefit More with a Learning Approach The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says that youth sports programs focusing on teambuilding and learning instead of a win-at-all-costs philosophy provide better lessons because they encourage your child to determine what is appropriate for many areas of their lives. Or , as the group says , it is essential to teach children that “success is not the same thing as winning, and failure is not the same thing as losing.” That’s why our approach focuses heavily on learning and self-improvement. Our youth have a chance to ask every adult for help or guidance and see what kinds of attitudes are best for them in life. It’s most important for children to learn and grow, so we train our coaches on that philosophy and prepare them with the right strategies to help our stars shine. The lessons your child learns during sports and after-school youth sports will shape how they grow and behave in their adult life. Join us in providing the right example for healthy participation in society. Your Family Benefits Too The last youth sports benefit we think you’ll love is the fact that after-school programs are proven to help working families and their communities. Programs like ours give youth a safe place to go while parents are at work and help those parents avoid unnecessarily missing work due to childcare concerns. Youth.gov notes that parents concerned about after-school care miss an average of eight work days per year. This can easily take up all of their sick and vacation days, meaning they have to lose out on pay as they struggle to keep their children safe when the school day is over. Youth involved in after-school and weekend programs are more likely to be supervised by adults and studies find that the children feel safer in their lives overall compared to youth who do not participate in such programs. ActivStars Athletics has been providing children in our community with a safe place to be after their school days for decades. • Bringing Fun Back to Youth Sports

Okay parents, here’s a question for you: What made you first playing love youth sports? Whether we’re talking to someone who is 9 or 90, the answer tends to be having fun and making friends. A wide range of studies find that children have always played youth sports for these reasons. And in 20 or 30 years, the next generations are expected to have the same answer. We all know how much kids love having fun. It’s the one thing they’ll always seem to do no matter what needs to be done. And, they still say sports can be fun. So, why are the majority of America’s children not playing sports once they reach their teens? Why are our kids retiring from sport so early? Should we let a child retire? We’ve got three questions for you: What’s your child’s favorite sport? What do you think they love most about it? What would it take to make them quit? While the answer to #1 can change a lot depending on your child, it’s likely that just about every parent reading this post will have the same answers for the second and third question. Your child most likely just wants to have fun, and a little pressure from parents, coaches, or players is all it takes to make that fun go away. Many of us never think about a child who stops playing sports as “retiring” but that finality is important. Most kids that quit sports don’t come back to them, and that can set a very sedentary precedent for the rest of their lives. The Aspen Institute started the conversation about getting kids not to retire and we think it’s an amazing initiative. It shows why we should be considering how kids feel and why it’s so important that 90% of kids say that they play sports because they want to have fun. Take just a minute and watch this, we think you’ll understand why we’re talking about fun and youth sports: Making sure youth sports coaches are trained To create a fun and encouraging atmosphere, ActivStars Athletics works very hard to build our practice, training, events, and other activities. We take time to tackle the big issues that can prevent fun and learning — and we know these issues can come from all different places. So, our efforts are designed to encourage your child and help them succeed through training and teamwork. That means creating lessons and drills that teach skills but also allow kids to play together. By focusing on team performance in many sports — and how to respect and praise others in our karate programs — our coaches lead by example when it comes to helping everyone have fun. We know it works because science tells us, and the kids tell us too. Your child focuses on the fun aspects and our coaches reinforce it. The last point to mention for our coaches is their training on how to discuss goals and accomplishments with children. ActivStars Athletics teaches trainers and coaches to listen and respect the kids in our program, both their wants and their feelings. By treating them with respect, these children are more likely to let us know when things go right or when they feel wrong or scared about something. In the discussions about their goals, we use the same techniques to focus on their development instead of their outcomes. We encourage kids to get better and to grow, without making first place the only goal that they know. It’s an amazing feeling to help any child enjoy sports and find the confidence they need on and off the field. Let’s talk about bullying (in and out of youth sports) We’re in the process of turning our coach and student training into an online resource that anyone can see and use. Sign up for our newsletter to get the announcement when this is ready and to start getting monthly tips for bullying and other dangers that you can use to start a conversation with your child. In the meantime, we want you to know that our coaches are specifically trained on recognizing and preventing bullying at every event and practice that we run. We also have lessons designed to teach your child what they can do and who can help. This is important because many people can be bullies and make sports no longer fun. Other children may bully based on someone’s appearance or athletic ability. We stop this by focusing our program on individual growth, not keeping score or punishing people who are at different levels. Parents and other adults can bully through inappropriate behavior like taunting and yelling. This is one reason we are strict with our spectator policy. We control the environment and that means limiting potential negative impact to our students. At games and other events, our coaches and staff let anyone know when behavior is not okay and may remove them if it continues. Some coaches who push scoring and what they feel as “professional skills” above all else can also bully the fun out of sport. That’s not our way. We think it should be discouraged at every point in youth sports. No child should feel so much pressure that they stop wanting to play and stop having fun. The training our coaches receive to help spot and stop bullying can help you too. Talk to us after class or send an email if you have questions or concerns. Learn our ActivStars Athletics philosophy to see why it’s beneficial for everyone. And, become a partner in your child’s love of sport. Finding fun near you Part of the mission of ActivStars Athletics is to make it easier for families to find and afford youth sports programs in their area. • Why Are Youth Sporting Events and Competitions Important?

Winning is an essential part of youth sports, but it is one among many complementary goals. ActivStars Athletics also focuses on the values of knowledge, respect, friendship, learning, and safety. Competition Fun, fitness, and social development come first, but winning can play a role in their impact. The “win” gives everyone involved in a sport the same goal to strive for, creating community and the vital lesson for how we treat ourselves and others in the context of “win or lose.” Youth sporting events from ActivStars Athletics are purpose-built to have opportunities for children to win, all while learning and reinforcing our lessons on community, safety, sportsmanship, and fun. Winning Has Its Proper Place One of the biggest benefits for youth sporting events like competition and tests is that it gives children the chance to demonstrate what they’ve learned. They can win, either individually or as a group, through the skills they’ve worked so hard to obtain. While we at ActivStars Athletics don’t place a large emphasis on winning a contest, we do give our students their chance to showcase their abilities. The desire to win can help your star achieve and grow in a variety of ways that are important to understand and discuss. Let’s take a moment to discuss just some of the ways that competition and winning can be important for youth sports. Winning builds confidence. Success makes us feel better about what we’ve accomplished and the same is true for our kids. What’s important here is that children get a chance to see and feel their gains. Importantly, this usually requires winning against a team of a similar skill level. Winning improves team spirit and cohesions. According to Rutgers, winning as a team can help build camaraderie and improve friendships for people on the same team. This leads to children learning how to work better in groups toward shared goals. Intra-squad competition, usually outside youth sporting events, also can improve team spirit. Winning improves a child’s overall motivation. Youth sporting events give kids goals and things to achieve. When they win at a sports competition, the average child will be more motivated to try and succeed in other areas of their lives. This might be additional sports and hobbies or their schoolwork. Winning helps children become more resilient. Knowing that there’s something beneficial and obtainable helps drive us to reach for it. Winning encourages those habits and helps children understand that one loss doesn’t mean that everything is lost. Winning comes with trying more often, and that invariably has more failures and mistakes. Striving to win, while having coaches and parents teach us what winning means, builds confidence in their abilities and helps them press on each time. At the same time, losing helps kids build resilience. We take time to teach everyone how to win and lose with dignity and perspective. While everyone is a star and deserves recognition for their effort, we also know that some aspects of life will come with setbacks. We all encounter loss, such as not getting a job or into a certain college, and practice with losing can help everyone take these events in stride. One thing we love about “winning” is that it doesn’t need to be measured against someone else. You can win in Karate by perfecting your form. The Showcase Versus the Showoff A final note, and perhaps the most important thing about competition is that it gives us a chance to teach kids how to win. ActivStars Athletics coaches and staff can demonstrate and encourage proper behavior when you do well and when you don’t. Our lessons help kids understand that success can make you feel good, but we should never use it to make others feel bad. Competitions and other youth sports events are the place we get to practice good sportsmanship and encourage fair play. It’s the best opportunity to lead by example and ensure all our kids have fun, regardless of the outcome. We build events, games, and tournaments as ways to celebrate how far kids have come in each season. They’re encouraged to demonstrate and showcase their personal and team accomplishments, instead of being a showoff that makes a sport less enjoyable for others. Join us for some upcoming events and see what that means for your child. Events in ActivStars Athletics Communities Karate Tournaments and Belt Testing Karate stars have multiple ways to showcase their skills. Each semester comes with tournaments for sparring and forms, with multiple rounds and awards. We also allow students who meet pre-testing requirements to show their forms and techniques in order to achieve their next black or brown belt rank. Not only must students demonstrate knowledge, but they are required to show good attitude, discipline, and spirit.

  • Understanding The Meaning of Karate Belt Colors - Part 1: Beginners

In the world of martial arts, the journey from a white belt to a black belt is not just about learning physical techniques; it's a holistic process that encompasses values, discipline, and personal growth. ActivStars Athletics provides a structured curriculum that emphasizes not only the technical aspects of karate but also instills essential life skills. Let's delve into the significance of each belt color in the beginner category. Beginner Classes (White – Green) The primary objective as students earn their beginner belts is to introduce the formal aspect of the martial arts: blocks, kicks, strikes, stances, kata, self-defense techniques, one-steps, sparring, martial arts etiquette, and discipline. ActivStars Athletics students also learn and reinforce anti-Bullying skills and lessons through our SafeShield Program . White Belt: Begin the Journey The white belt signifies a fresh start, symbolizing purity and the beginning of a student's journey in karate. At this level, the primary focus is on fundamental blocks, strikes, and kicks. Additionally, students learn essential self-defense techniques, with an emphasis on breaking free and seeking safety. The dojo etiquette and traditions are introduced, laying the foundation for respect and discipline within the martial arts community. One of the remarkable features of this program is the incorporation of safety awareness and moral values, including Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons. Students are encouraged to make new friendships, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support. Yellow Belt: Building on Foundations As students progress to the yellow belt, they transition from the pure white canvas to a shade of yellow, signifying the first rays of sunlight breaking through. This phase is about building on the foundational techniques learned at the white belt level. The curriculum reinforces blocks, strikes, and kicks, along with further development of self-defense skills. The focus on dojo etiquette and traditions continues, instilling a sense of respect for the art and fellow practitioners. Similar to the white belt level, students engage in weekly karate home challenges, earning ribbons as a testament to their dedication and progress. Building friendships and reinforcing Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons remain integral components of the learning experience. Green Belt: Mastering Fundamentals Arriving at the green belt level is a significant milestone in a student's journey. It represents growth, progress, and a deeper understanding of the art. The green belt signifies that the foundations have been laid, and it's time to delve into more formal aspects of martial arts. By this stage, students have acquired a solid foundation in basic blocks, strikes, and kicks. They continue to hone self-defense techniques while also developing a deeper understanding of dojo etiquette and traditions. The introduction of kata/forms and basic sparring skills provides students with a glimpse into the formal aspects of martial arts. Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons remain a crucial element, reinforcing safety awareness. The green belt level marks a transition towards a more comprehensive understanding of karate. The journey from white to green belt is a transformative one, marked by the acquisition of foundational skills, a deepening of understanding, and a growing sense of community within the dojo. Your belt is a complement to your karate gi and serves as a center point representing your martial art’s development. It’s a testament to a student's dedication and progress in their martial arts journey. Stay tuned for the next blog post where we'll explore the significance of blue and purple belts in karate, and how we teach them at ActivStars Athletics.
