  • How to Keep Your Child Athlete Healthy This Winter

    When the temperature drops low in winter, it’s easy for parents and child athletes to want to stay in, snuggle down, and become one with the couch. There’s nothing wrong with a good winter video session every now and then, but staying healthy requires getting up and moving too! To help our ActivStars Athletics family stay active, happy, and healthy, we’ve got some tips for what you can do easily and what to be careful of all winter long. Stay Active! The best tip for your child, whether they’re a sports fanatic or just enjoy the occasional game, is to play all winter long. Look for sports and opportunities indoors or out to help your child play and stay fit. For older children, encourage them to work out at home to avoid the cold. You can let them use their own body weight for exercise (think push-ups) or pick up some light resistance gear. There are plenty of free and low-cost options, and this can keep your child healthy if they don’t want to go outside where it’s chilly. Here are some of our favorite exercises for the winter months: Lift weights, stretch, or do push-ups while watching a show or playing a video game. Dance! You’ll get a full-body workout and have plenty of fun. YouTube has great videos that teach you the latest dance moves, making it easy to treat this as group fun. Yoga and meditation. Stretching is a great way to keep your muscles, heart, and lungs healthy. Pair it with relaxation or meditation to reduce overall stress and anxiety. Remember that cold months can lead to increases in depression for some people. Slow down karate forms or learn some basic tai chi to work your muscles by controlling each movement. It’s a terrific way to work on balance and improve breathing too. If you have a covered walkway, driveway, or access to a space like a tennis or basketball court, try jumping rope. It’ll work out the whole body and give you a boost to rhythm and timing that’s useful in many sports. Walk it out. A brisk walk is a straightforward way for the whole family to stay active and healthy. You can make it a game or contest by using everyone’s smartphones as step counters and see who gets the most steps. Plus, a fast-paced walk can burn 300 or more calories per hour. Enjoy the season! There’s plenty of things you can do to have fun during the winter that still gives you a workout. Building a fire can burn 80 calories an hour, while shoveling snow gets close to 200. General Health Tips It seems like everyone gets a cold during the winter, but there are steps you can take to reduce this risk. First, keep everyone home when sick because you don’t want to catch a cold from someone else or get other people sick. Second, wash your hands the way doctors tell you to — a handy guide for little ones here . Also, teach children to cough or sneeze into tissues or the inside of their elbow. This prevents the spread of germs. Remember that you can’t get the flu from a flu shot! So, it’s a beautiful way to protect your child against very severe and dangerous illness. Another common misconception to tackle is winter sunburn. Your child can definitely get sunburns during the winter, especially when it reflects off of snow or water. Protect your child’s skin and eyes during winter activities. If you’ll be spending a lot of time indoors, please get a carbon monoxide detector for your home. It might just save your child’s life. Winter-Time Warnings to Watch Wintry weather can change and become dangerous very quickly, especially if you’re in the mountains, deserts, or an area where it snows heavily. Always check your local weather conditions and the wind chill so that you’re dressing appropriately. For smaller children, the best recommendation is to give them one more layer than you are comfortable wearing. Layers are great for exercise because you can take some off as you warm up, so you don’t get overheated. Bundle up a little extra if humidity is high or there’s a lot of wind. Remember that at a wind chill level of below minus 18 F (minus 28 C), frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less . If someone has been outside for a long time, always check on them. Danger signs for hypothermia include intense shivering, fatigue, loss of coordination, and slurred speech. Exercising outside in cold, rainy, or snowy weather increases the risk of hypothermia. At ActivStars Athletics , our mission is to make our martial arts programs as inclusive as possible. We’re proud to have a fantastic staff and training on Autism Spectrum Disorder and other needs. It’s how we can best work with all children in our communities. Parents of special needs children should encourage participation in sports and physical activity in general. Don’t approach sports as something they can’t do. Exercise and games create a potential place for your child to grow, according to leading medical research. Your child with special needs can still participate and get benefits such as boosting self-confidence, improved cognitive health and social and motor skills, and even reduce risks for some weight issues or diseases. Stanford Medicine’s Children’s Health department suggests parents find ways for all children to participate in sports. Dr. Riese is a martial arts teacher here at ActivStars Athletics and currently assists at classes, tournaments, testing, and special events such as Masters’ Camps and summer camp. She has a storied career as a teacher, counselor, and school psychologist, working extensively with children who have special needs. She has provided training to parents, teachers, school bus drivers, teaching assistants, and cafeteria aides on safe ways to help children and adults who are agitated; and how to de-escalate potentially violent situations. And we’re lucky that she brings those same lessons and information here to our programs at ActivStars Athletics. We spoke with Dr. Riese about some of the work she is doing with children who have special needs, and the ActivStars Athletics approach to their health, wellness, education, and growth. She is currently working with children of a variety of ages who need special attention, from learning how to say when they’re frustrated or need extra time to more elementary activities such as entering the dojo on their own and decreasing their need to have parents present. Defining Our Approach “I want to help children feel successful with their abilities, no matter where they are. So, we have to know how success is defined for them, so we can find ways for them to engage, learn, and have fun,” said Dr. Riese. And we also share with parents that there are times your child is just like everyone else. For example, most small children are initially afraid of sparring. So, all kids understand that not everyone likes every kind of touch, and we work with everyone to slowly acclimate. ActivStars Athletics’ team is trained to work with children as their needs change, which means we’re always putting education and comfort first. And we make it easy for parents to stay on top of information too. How Does ActivStars Respond to Children with Special Needs? “We work with every family and take the child where they’re at,” said Dr. Riese. “It might take little steps for a child to wear a piece of equipment before being ready to participate. Everything is done in increments, and that’s always okay.” ActivStars Athletics staff receives training and has ongoing discussions to help everyone learn how to care for children with differing needs. Our annual meeting specifically covered working with children who have Autism because it has some unique concerns, but we also learn about ADHD, depression, social anxiety, children who are non-verbal, and other things that may impact a child’s desire or ability to play and learn. Our efforts aim to normalize the interactions that all children have, allowing us to work with everyone. Not only does it support those children with special needs and help their parents understand what to expect, but it also encourages other children to build empathy and friendships with kids who may seem different, but often are much more similar than first impressions suggest. Celebrating Together Plus, by working together, we often get to celebrate the victories and improvements that children make. It brings our staff and the child’s parent a lot of joy. Sometimes, nothing is better in a class than a child advocating for what they need. This might be telling us that they need a little time by themselves instead of exhibiting other behaviors. We create a space where they feel comfortable doing this. It’s perfect practice for feeling overwhelmed outside class too. In practice, our work involves pairing a child with special needs with someone who will be patient and engage with them as needed. We start with adults at the beginning but can also encourage limited interaction with friends and other children once your child becomes more comfortable. When possible, we work to manage environmental triggers for our students, such as proximity to other children or quick changes in activities. Programs are designed to give us flexibility so that everyone can progress at their own pace. “Parents are eager for a child to have as normal an experience as they can. That’s what we try to accomplish,” said Dr. Riese. Talk with Us About Your Child’s Special Needs Considering a sports program for your child? Have concerns about their needs, safety, or other requirements? We encourage you to speak with us. We train coaches and staff to work with children on a wide range of issues already. However, we can do our best when we know you and your child. “We’re already speaking with parents a lot to find out how to provide the assistance a child needs without impacting the other children who are there,” said Dr. Riese. She notes that ActivStars staff actively monitor situations whenever a child needs help. There are a few things we encourage parents to discuss with us: Diagnosis Triggers Medical needs or changes to medicine If your child has had a rough day And what brings them comfort or helps ease discomfort We’ll do what we can to accommodate your child. For example, one child would bring a stuffed animal when the first joined. So, it came to class too. Slowly, the animal moved away from the center of activity as the child grew more comfortable with class. It’s there on the side if the child needs it. But, they’ve grown to engage in class and activities, so the stuffed animal is more observer than participant these days. That’s a fantastic feeling for us, the child, and their parents. We encourage everyone to come and have fun, which means a stuffed animal joins in, or mom and dad too. There are lots of different ways to help, and we’re continually training staff on those programs.     Every semester we see a growing increase in interest and participation in youth s ports programs for kids of all ages. Younger children are starting to look at sports as a way to make friends and have fun. While you and educators like us often focus on the health benefits (physical and mental), we must foster the desire for fun. Let’s keep that in mind when encouraging children to get active. Parental support of fun and play are proven to keep your child more engaged and excited about youth sports. That’s regardless of the sport or their ability level. Work with your school, coaches, and programs like ActivStars Athletics. Together, we’ll foster a love of the game that’s fun and builds a healthy foundation for the rest of their life. Students play sports to have fun As parents and educators, we like to think of all the benefits for children and youth who engage in sports like karate. Things that come to mind are keeping our kids safe after school and on the weekends, away from the wrong crowd. It turns out that our kids have something else in mind: fun. Regardless of age, gender, and the sport they choose to play, “kids are out there to get away from their lives and have a good time with their friends.” So, in the spirit of listening, we wanted to take a quick look at some of the core concepts of fun and what you might be able to do as parents to ensure that your star is happy. An enjoyable time keeps kids engaged longer An important note for us getting started is that the pursuit of fun can have direct positive benefits for your child. This isn’t a flight of fancy or a whim. It’s a way to build a life-long love of sports and activity that will help your child grow and age properly — especially if they develop habits that continue when they become parents too. Having fun with a sport or activity helps your child do it longer. Given that 70% of kids quit youth sports by age 13 , we must listen to each child to keep them engaged. Many say they left because the focus was all on winning and placed significant pressure on them. They didn’t see any of the fun benefits or other educational and safety opportunities . If your child is out on the field to have fun, the pressure of competition can force them out. Sports psychologist Justin Anderson of Premier Sport Psychology also says that letting your youth athlete have fun and enjoy the sports they play will help them do better and learn more. “Kids are there to learn, and they can’t do it in a negative or stressful environment.” When they’re having fun, they want to train and play more and may even perform at higher levels because they don’t worry that a coach, parent, or another adult will be mad at them for a mistake. It keeps their self-confidence high, says Anderson . The role of parents in fun and sport The part of parents in youth sports enjoyment is to help your child find what they enjoy and to encourage them to participate in a safe activity and environment. A large-scale study on youth sports found a few things we think are worth sharing: Your child’s perception of your support and your belief that sports will have positive benefits impact how much they want to participate. Your encouragement plays a more prominent role than almost any other factor, including whether or not you play sports or do another exercise. Parents who express the importance of activity have more active children. This is seen in parents of children of all types and ability. Your positive attitude about participating (think of it as empowering instead of prioritizing winning) is shown to increase how much your child enjoys sports and can decrease sports-related stress. Parents play a crucial role in creating an environment for their child to enjoy youth sports. You also play a role in how much fun other children on your child’s team have. At the same time, parents are the most significant protection system a child has. You are the best to prevent abuse by anyone, from coaches and medical staff to other parents and people outside of sports. To be your child’s best protector, the study suggests you ask questions of everyone involved. Have that conversation Speak to sports program providers like us. Talk to other parents.
