  • Youth Sports and Your Child: A Winning Combination for a Bright Future

A compelling after-school program for your child can help turn aimless hours and screen time into productive, enjoyable learning time that enhances their lives for years to come. We looked at a broad set of research on youth sports plus our kids (and parents) to figure out how ActivStars were performing in our programs, in class, and their daily lives. We found a few important things that show just how much your child would benefit from a rigorous after-school program of youth sports. Of course, we’d love them to become ActivStars, but we hope this can help convince you to get them in whichever program works best. If you want the highlights, here are six things that scientific studies have linked after-school sports and team programs to developing: Improved focus on accomplishing goals Increased discipline Improved ability to work as part of a team (outside of sports) Enhanced physical skills such as balance and coordination Increased enjoyment of participating in social activities Activity is also linked to a reduced risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease Keep reading to learn about some more surprising benefits we’ve discovered. Youth Sports Behavioral Benefits Are Most Impactful When Specifically Taught Here’s one of the most interesting findings from a major review of after-school and weekend school programs: behavioral benefits such as improving leadership, developing character, or keeping behavior appropriate are found to be most successful and long-lasting when specifically taught . This means children need more than a study hall where they are shushed when too loud. They need specific help and guidance on how to behave. Children need “programming directed at developing social and emotional skills” to achieve significant positive effects on social behavior and self-perceptions. ActivStars Athletics works these skills into our training and coaching so that all of our youth have opportunities to learn and grow. You can find out more about this in our SAFE Shield and anti-bullying programs . Youth Benefit More with a Learning Approach The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says that youth sports programs focusing on teambuilding and learning instead of a win-at-all-costs philosophy provide better lessons because they encourage your child to determine what is appropriate for many areas of their lives. Or , as the group says , it is essential to teach children that “success is not the same thing as winning, and failure is not the same thing as losing.” That’s why our approach focuses heavily on learning and self-improvement. Our youth have a chance to ask every adult for help or guidance and see what kinds of attitudes are best for them in life. It’s most important for children to learn and grow, so we train our coaches on that philosophy and prepare them with the right strategies to help our stars shine. The lessons your child learns during sports and after-school youth sports will shape how they grow and behave in their adult life. Join us in providing the right example for healthy participation in society. Your Family Benefits Too The last youth sports benefit we think you’ll love is the fact that after-school programs are proven to help working families and their communities. Programs like ours give youth a safe place to go while parents are at work and help those parents avoid unnecessarily missing work due to childcare concerns. Youth.gov notes that parents concerned about after-school care miss an average of eight work days per year. This can easily take up all of their sick and vacation days, meaning they have to lose out on pay as they struggle to keep their children safe when the school day is over. Youth involved in after-school and weekend programs are more likely to be supervised by adults and studies find that the children feel safer in their lives overall compared to youth who do not participate in such programs. ActivStars Athletics has been providing children in our community with a safe place to be after their school days for decades. • Bringing Fun Back to Youth Sports

Okay parents, here’s a question for you: What made you first playing love youth sports? Whether we’re talking to someone who is 9 or 90, the answer tends to be having fun and making friends. A wide range of studies find that children have always played youth sports for these reasons. And in 20 or 30 years, the next generations are expected to have the same answer. We all know how much kids love having fun. It’s the one thing they’ll always seem to do no matter what needs to be done. And, they still say sports can be fun. So, why are the majority of America’s children not playing sports once they reach their teens? Why are our kids retiring from sport so early? Should we let a child retire? We’ve got three questions for you: What’s your child’s favorite sport? What do you think they love most about it? What would it take to make them quit? While the answer to #1 can change a lot depending on your child, it’s likely that just about every parent reading this post will have the same answers for the second and third question. Your child most likely just wants to have fun, and a little pressure from parents, coaches, or players is all it takes to make that fun go away. Many of us never think about a child who stops playing sports as “retiring” but that finality is important. Most kids that quit sports don’t come back to them, and that can set a very sedentary precedent for the rest of their lives. The Aspen Institute started the conversation about getting kids not to retire and we think it’s an amazing initiative. It shows why we should be considering how kids feel and why it’s so important that 90% of kids say that they play sports because they want to have fun. Take just a minute and watch this, we think you’ll understand why we’re talking about fun and youth sports: Making sure youth sports coaches are trained To create a fun and encouraging atmosphere, ActivStars Athletics works very hard to build our practice, training, events, and other activities. We take time to tackle the big issues that can prevent fun and learning — and we know these issues can come from all different places. So, our efforts are designed to encourage your child and help them succeed through training and teamwork. That means creating lessons and drills that teach skills but also allow kids to play together. By focusing on team performance in many sports — and how to respect and praise others in our karate programs — our coaches lead by example when it comes to helping everyone have fun. We know it works because science tells us, and the kids tell us too. Your child focuses on the fun aspects and our coaches reinforce it. The last point to mention for our coaches is their training on how to discuss goals and accomplishments with children. ActivStars Athletics teaches trainers and coaches to listen and respect the kids in our program, both their wants and their feelings. By treating them with respect, these children are more likely to let us know when things go right or when they feel wrong or scared about something. In the discussions about their goals, we use the same techniques to focus on their development instead of their outcomes. We encourage kids to get better and to grow, without making first place the only goal that they know. It’s an amazing feeling to help any child enjoy sports and find the confidence they need on and off the field. Let’s talk about bullying (in and out of youth sports) We’re in the process of turning our coach and student training into an online resource that anyone can see and use. Sign up for our newsletter to get the announcement when this is ready and to start getting monthly tips for bullying and other dangers that you can use to start a conversation with your child. In the meantime, we want you to know that our coaches are specifically trained on recognizing and preventing bullying at every event and practice that we run. We also have lessons designed to teach your child what they can do and who can help. This is important because many people can be bullies and make sports no longer fun. Other children may bully based on someone’s appearance or athletic ability. We stop this by focusing our program on individual growth, not keeping score or punishing people who are at different levels. Parents and other adults can bully through inappropriate behavior like taunting and yelling. This is one reason we are strict with our spectator policy. We control the environment and that means limiting potential negative impact to our students. At games and other events, our coaches and staff let anyone know when behavior is not okay and may remove them if it continues. Some coaches who push scoring and what they feel as “professional skills” above all else can also bully the fun out of sport. That’s not our way. We think it should be discouraged at every point in youth sports. No child should feel so much pressure that they stop wanting to play and stop having fun. The training our coaches receive to help spot and stop bullying can help you too. Talk to us after class or send an email if you have questions or concerns. Learn our ActivStars Athletics philosophy to see why it’s beneficial for everyone. And, become a partner in your child’s love of sport. Finding fun near you Part of the mission of ActivStars Athletics is to make it easier for families to find and afford youth sports programs in their area. We work hard to ensure classes are as low-cost as possible, and we also provide financial scholarships, under special circumstances, to help everyone participate. Contact us directly to learn more about those scholarships, or visit our site for specific costs based on class time and level. If you’re ready to start looking at what’s closest to you, we recommend you download our new mobile app in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store . The new interface makes it simple to see what’s available in your area, class times, events, and more. Plus, whenever enrollment is open for the upcoming semester, you can quickly, easily, and safely enroll your child right from the app.

  • Why Are Youth Sporting Events and Competitions Important?

Winning is an essential part of youth sports, but it is one among many complementary goals. ActivStars Athletics also focuses on the values of knowledge, respect, friendship, learning, and safety. Competition Fun, fitness, and social development come first, but winning can play a role in their impact. The “win” gives everyone involved in a sport the same goal to strive for, creating community and the vital lesson for how we treat ourselves and others in the context of “win or lose.” Youth sporting events from ActivStars Athletics are purpose-built to have opportunities for children to win, all while learning and reinforcing our lessons on community, safety, sportsmanship, and fun. Winning Has Its Proper Place One of the biggest benefits for youth sporting events like competition and tests is that it gives children the chance to demonstrate what they’ve learned. They can win, either individually or as a group, through the skills they’ve worked so hard to obtain. While we at ActivStars Athletics don’t place a large emphasis on winning a contest, we do give our students their chance to showcase their abilities. The desire to win can help your star achieve and grow in a variety of ways that are important to understand and discuss. Let’s take a moment to discuss just some of the ways that competition and winning can be important for youth sports. Winning builds confidence. Success makes us feel better about what we’ve accomplished and the same is true for our kids. What’s important here is that children get a chance to see and feel their gains. Importantly, this usually requires winning against a team of a similar skill level. Winning improves team spirit and cohesions. According to Rutgers, winning as a team can help build camaraderie and improve friendships for people on the same team. This leads to children learning how to work better in groups toward shared goals. Intra-squad competition, usually outside youth sporting events, also can improve team spirit. Winning improves a child’s overall motivation. Youth sporting events give kids goals and things to achieve. When they win at a sports competition, the average child will be more motivated to try and succeed in other areas of their lives. This might be additional sports and hobbies or their schoolwork. Winning helps children become more resilient. Knowing that there’s something beneficial and obtainable helps drive us to reach for it. Winning encourages those habits and helps children understand that one loss doesn’t mean that everything is lost. Winning comes with trying more often, and that invariably has more failures and mistakes. Striving to win, while having coaches and parents teach us what winning means, builds confidence in their abilities and helps them press on each time. At the same time, losing helps kids build resilience. We take time to teach everyone how to win and lose with dignity and perspective. While everyone is a star and deserves recognition for their effort, we also know that some aspects of life will come with setbacks. We all encounter loss, such as not getting a job or into a certain college, and practice with losing can help everyone take these events in stride. One thing we love about “winning” is that it doesn’t need to be measured against someone else. You can win in Karate by perfecting your form. The Showcase Versus the Showoff A final note, and perhaps the most important thing about competition is that it gives us a chance to teach kids how to win. ActivStars Athletics coaches and staff can demonstrate and encourage proper behavior when you do well and when you don’t. Our lessons help kids understand that success can make you feel good, but we should never use it to make others feel bad. Competitions and other youth sports events are the place we get to practice good sportsmanship and encourage fair play. It’s the best opportunity to lead by example and ensure all our kids have fun, regardless of the outcome. We build events, games, and tournaments as ways to celebrate how far kids have come in each season. They’re encouraged to demonstrate and showcase their personal and team accomplishments, instead of being a showoff that makes a sport less enjoyable for others. Join us for some upcoming events and see what that means for your child. Events in ActivStars Athletics Communities Karate Tournaments and Belt Testing Karate stars have multiple ways to showcase their skills. Each semester comes with tournaments for sparring and forms, with multiple rounds and awards. We also allow students who meet pre-testing requirements to show their forms and techniques in order to achieve their next black or brown belt rank. Not only must students demonstrate knowledge, but they are required to show good attitude, discipline, and spirit.

  • Understanding The Meaning of Karate Belt Colors - Part 1: Beginners

ActivStars Athletics provides a structured curriculum that emphasizes not only the technical aspects of karate but also instills essential life skills. Let's delve into the significance of each belt color in the beginner category. Beginner Classes (White – Green) The primary objective as students earn their beginner belts is to introduce the formal aspect of the martial arts: blocks, kicks, strikes, stances, kata, self-defense techniques, one-steps, sparring, martial arts etiquette, and discipline. ActivStars Athletics students also learn and reinforce anti-Bullying skills and lessons through our SafeShield Program . White Belt: Begin the Journey The white belt signifies a fresh start, symbolizing purity and the beginning of a student's journey in karate. At this level, the primary focus is on fundamental blocks, strikes, and kicks. Additionally, students learn essential self-defense techniques, with an emphasis on breaking free and seeking safety. The dojo etiquette and traditions are introduced, laying the foundation for respect and discipline within the martial arts community. One of the remarkable features of this program is the incorporation of safety awareness and moral values, including Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons. Students are encouraged to make new friendships, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support. This phase is about building on the foundational techniques learned at the white belt level. The curriculum reinforces blocks, strikes, and kicks, along with further development of self-defense skills. The focus on dojo etiquette and traditions continues, instilling a sense of respect for the art and fellow practitioners. Similar to the white belt level, students engage in weekly karate home challenges, earning ribbons as a testament to their dedication and progress. Building friendships and reinforcing Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons remain integral components of the learning experience. Green Belt: Mastering Fundamentals Arriving at the green belt level is a significant milestone in a student's journey. It represents growth, progress, and a deeper understanding of the art. The green belt signifies that the foundations have been laid, and it's time to delve into more formal aspects of martial arts. By this stage, students have acquired a solid foundation in basic blocks, strikes, and kicks. They continue to hone self-defense techniques while also developing a deeper understanding of dojo etiquette and traditions. The introduction of kata/forms and basic sparring skills provides students with a glimpse into the formal aspects of martial arts. Anti-Abduction SafeShield lessons remain a crucial element, reinforcing safety awareness. The green belt level marks a transition towards a more comprehensive understanding of karate. The journey from white to green belt is a transformative one, marked by the acquisition of foundational skills, a deepening of understanding, and a growing sense of community within the dojo. • Beginner’s Guide to Martial Arts Weapons: Safety & Skill Development

Unlocking the Power of Martial Arts Weapons—The Right Way Martial arts weapons training is an exciting extension of traditional hand-to-hand techniques, adding a dynamic layer to a student’s skill set. It enhances discipline, focus, and coordination while fostering a deep respect for martial arts traditions. However, safety is paramount and a priority at ActivStars Athletics. We put together a list of fundamentals to consider when training with weapons. Whether your child is eager to learn how to wield a bo staff or you’re considering expanding your own martial arts skills, safety and proper development are key. Why Train with Martial Arts Weapons? Weapons training is not just about learning how to use traditional martial arts tools—it is about refining fundamental skills such as agility, precision, balance, and self-control. Many students find that working with weapons sharpens their overall martial arts ability, making their empty-hand techniques even stronger. Additionally, practicing with weapons introduces historical and cultural elements that deepen a student’s appreciation for martial arts traditions. At ActivStars Athletics, weapons training is designed to be safe, engaging, and age-appropriate, helping students develop control and confidence before moving on to advanced techniques. Common Martial Arts Weapons & Their Purpose ActivStars Athletics incorporates a variety of weapons into training to help students refine their technique and improve their martial arts skills. Each weapon has unique characteristics that challenge and develop different physical and mental abilities: Bo Staff  – Great for balance, speed, and control. This long, wooden staff enhances striking techniques and defensive movements while improving coordination. Nunchaku  – Builds wrist flexibility, coordination, and precision. Originally a farming tool, nunchaku training emphasizes fluid motion and quick reflexes. Escrima Sticks  – Ideal for hand speed and agility. These lightweight sticks, used in Filipino martial arts, improve reaction time and develop strong striking techniques. Sai  – Develops defensive blocking skills and strength. The sai, a three-pronged weapon, is primarily used for parrying attacks and enhancing hand control. Each weapon serves a unique purpose in skill development while reinforcing the principles of self-discipline and respect. Safety First: Rules for Weapons Training When learning martial arts weapons, safety is the top priority. Proper instruction, awareness, and respect for the weapon help prevent injuries and ensure a positive training experience. Here are the essential rules every student should follow: 1. Use Training Weapons Beginners should always start with foam or padded versions of weapons to minimize the risk of injury while developing foundational skills. 2. Respect the Weapon Martial arts weapons are tools for training, not toys. They should always be handled with care and used responsibly. 3. Follow Instructor Guidance Proper technique ensures safety and prevents accidents. Students should listen closely to their instructors and avoid practicing weapons techniques without supervision. 4. Train in a Clear Space Practicing in a clutter-free area minimizes risks and allows for full movement without obstructions. 5. Maintain Focus & Control Lack of attention or carelessness when training with weapons can lead to injury. Students should remain focused and practice with control at all times. Building Skill & Confidence with Weapons Training Students progress through structured lessons, developing coordination, timing, and control before advancing to more complex techniques. Weapons training follows a structured path similar to empty-hand martial arts training: 1. Basic Handling & Movements Students learn how to grip, maneuver, and control the weapon safely while practicing fundamental strikes and blocks. 2. Forms & Drills Similar to kata in empty-hand training, weapons forms and drills help students develop muscle memory, precision, and fluid motion. 3. Defensive & Offensive Applications As students advance, they begin practicing controlled sparring techniques and defensive maneuvers under instructor supervision. 4. Mastery & Performance Advanced students refine their skills with weapons demonstrations, competitions, and high-level applications, further developing their discipline and technical prowess. The Benefits of Martial Arts Weapons Training Weapons training is about more than just technique—it instills valuable life skills such as: Enhanced Focus  – The precision required in weapons training sharpens concentration and mental discipline. Improved Coordination  – Handling weapons demands refined motor skills, benefiting overall martial arts ability. Greater Confidence  – Mastering a weapon builds self-assurance and a sense of achievement. Deeper Martial Arts Understanding  – Weapons training connects students to the rich history and traditions of martial arts. Martial arts weapons training is a fantastic way to expand skills while reinforcing discipline and respect. Whether practicing with a bo staff, nunchaku, escrima sticks, or sai, students at ActivStars Athletics gain valuable experience in coordination, control, and responsibility. With a strong emphasis on safety, structured skill development, and traditional martial arts values, weapons training becomes a powerful tool for personal growth. Ready to begin your weapons training journey? Talk to your instructor about getting started and unlock a new level of martial arts mastery!

  • How Martial Arts Teaches Kids Leadership Skills for Life

Leadership is a crucial skill that children can develop from an early age, and martial arts provides the perfect foundation for cultivating these qualities. Beyond self-defense and fitness, martial arts instill confidence, responsibility, and the ability to guide and inspire others. At ActivStars Athletics, we take leadership training a step further with our dedicated Leadership Program, which encourages students to mentor peers, take responsibility for their progress, and build confidence through achievement. The effectiveness of our leadership program is reflected in that 90% of our instructors were once ActivStars Athletics students, many of whom are now senior instructors. How Martial Arts Develops Leadership Qualities Martial arts is structured to help children grow into strong, capable leaders. Through practice, discipline, and perseverance, they gain essential leadership traits that will benefit them for a lifetime. 1. Confidence Through Achievement A great leader is someone who believes in their abilities, and martial arts fosters this confidence through progressive skill-building. This continuous cycle of challenge and accomplishment helps children: Build self-assurance  by seeing the results of their hard work. Develop a growth mindset , understanding that persistence leads to success. Learn public speaking and demonstration skills  as they progress and assist in class. 2. • Top 5 Anti-Bullying Techniques Every Child Should Know

Taught in The ActivStars Athletics SAFE Shield Program Bullying is a challenge many children face, and equipping them with the right tools to handle such situations can make a world of difference. At ActivStars Athletics, our SAFE Shield Program is embedded into our full curriculum and empowers kids with practical anti-bullying techniques that are effective, build confidence and self-esteem, and are tools kids will use not only when they are the victims but also to support others who are victims of bullying. Here are the top five techniques every child should know to navigate bullying scenarios with strength and poise: 1. The Power of Self-Awareness Self-awareness is the foundation of all anti-bullying strategies. By understanding their emotions, triggers, and environment, kids can better assess and respond to potential bullying situations. SAFE Shield teaches children to: Recognize early warning signs of bullying behavior. Maintain situational awareness to avoid risky encounters. Project confidence through posture and body language, deterring would-be bullies. Understand and resolve conflict peacefully, stopping the fight before it begins. Practice mindfulness techniques, such as the 'Bubbles in a Glass of Soda' exercise, to manage emotions and prevent reactions driven by anger or fear. 2. De-escalation Strategies Not all confrontations require physical action. In many cases, de-escalation can diffuse a tense situation before it escalates. ActivStars Athletics emphasizes techniques like: Using calm and assertive language to address the bully. Avoiding aggressive responses that may provoke further conflict. Redirecting the bully’s attention to neutralize the situation. Developing a 'Mind Like Water'—a clear and calm mindset that allows children to see situations as they truly are, rather than reacting emotionally. Utilizing 'Fogging,' a verbal technique to neutralize teasing or insults, using responses such as 'Maybe so' or 'You could be right.' Teaching kids to stay calm and collected under pressure is a cornerstone of the SAFE Shield approach. 3. Boundary Setting with Words Setting boundaries is a vital skill for children to establish respect and deter unwanted behavior. The program trains kids to use their voice effectively by: Practicing firm yet polite verbal responses such as, “Stop, I don’t like that.” Repeating their message if necessary to reinforce their boundaries. Using tone and volume to convey seriousness without aggression. Developing a 'Laser Beam of Focus'—learning to concentrate their mental and physical energy to confidently walk away from threats. This technique helps children assert their needs while fostering mutual respect. 4. Seeking Help from Trusted Adults SAFE Shield emphasizes the importance of involving trusted adults in bullying situations. Children learn: How to identify safe adults, such as teachers, parents, or coaches. The importance of reporting bullying early to prevent escalation. How to communicate the details of a bullying incident clearly and honestly. Understanding that memories are old, but life is new—letting go of past pain and focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on negative experiences. Encouraging open communication ensures that children don’t feel alone in their experiences. 5. Basic Self-Defense Techniques When all else fails, knowing basic self-defense techniques can provide children with the confidence to protect themselves physically if needed. ActivStars Athletics integrates age-appropriate self-defense training, focusing on: Simple moves to escape grabs or holds. Strategies to create distance and seek safety. Reinforcing that self-defense is a last resort and should only be used to ensure safety. Understanding the power of attitude—by developing a 'Black Belt Mind' with positive thinking, children gain strength and confidence in handling difficult situations. Applying self-defense skills in the right way: Be strong and assertive, use verbal self-defense first, and only resort to physical techniques if there is no other option. These techniques are taught in a controlled environment, emphasizing responsibility and respect. Why the SAFE Shield Program Matters The SAFE Shield Program goes beyond teaching techniques; it builds character. By focusing on self-awareness, respect, and confidence, ActivStars Athletics ensures that children are prepared to handle challenging situations. Parents can feel confident knowing their children are learning skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. Empower your child to stand up against bullying with ActivStars Athletics. Enroll in our SAFE Shield Program today and give them the tools they need to navigate life with confidence and resilience. Find a Karate Class Near You
