Different Types of Martial Arts for Kids: Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu and More

There are many different types of martial arts, and karate, taekwondo, kung fu and jiu-jitsu each build strength, focus and confidence in their own way. This guide explains the different types of martial arts in plain language, and how ActivStars Athletics brings them together in one curriculum.

The striking arts

Striking arts use punches, kicks and other strikes. They are the styles most people picture first, and they build speed, coordination and focus.

Karate

Karate began on the Japanese island of Okinawa and is built around punches, kicks, knee strikes and blocks. Students practice kata, which are choreographed patterns, and learn controlled sparring. Balance, discipline and respect for instructors and classmates are part of every class, which makes karate a strong foundation for young beginners.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo comes from Korea and is known for fast, high and spinning kicks. It became an official Olympic medal sport in 2000. Kids build flexibility, leg strength and coordination, and the belt system gives them clear goals to work toward.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing blends punches and kicks, drawing on karate and boxing, and took shape in Japan and the United States in the 1960s and 70s. Classes are high-energy, with pad work, combinations and plenty of conditioning. Kids build stamina, timing and confidence while they burn off energy.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is called the art of eight limbs, because it uses fists, elbows, knees and shins. Youth classes focus on technique and conditioning with controlled contact. It teaches strong fundamentals, core strength and mental toughness.

Kung fu

Kung fu is an umbrella term for many Chinese martial arts. Most styles stress flowing forms, agility and balance, and some borrow movements from animals. It is a great way to build body awareness, flexibility and concentration.

The grappling arts

Grappling arts focus on holds, throws and ground control instead of strikes. They teach kids to stay calm under pressure and solve problems with their whole body.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a ground-based art that uses leverage and technique instead of size or strength. It grew out of Japanese jujutsu and judo in the early 1900s. Because it relies on technique, a smaller student can learn to control a larger partner, and kids build patience, resilience and problem-solving skills along the way.

Judo

Judo was founded in Japan by Jigoro Kano in 1882 and centers on throws, pins and controlled holds. It has been an Olympic sport since 1964. Students learn how to fall safely, keep their balance and work respectfully with a partner.

How ActivStars Athletics brings them together

At ActivStars Athletics, we incorporate these different types of martial arts into our curriculum instead of limiting students to a single style. Our classes draw on karate, taekwondo, kung fu and jiu-jitsu, so kids learn a full range of skills in a program built around their age and ability.

That blend matters for three reasons:

  • Strong fundamentals. Kids learn stances, strikes, balance and body control that carry over to every style.

  • Variety keeps classes fresh. Students stay excited when they get to kick, strike and grapple, not just repeat one routine.

  • Well-rounded confidence. Learning different ways to move and respond helps kids feel capable in sports, at school and with friends.
